Big changes at Kuntai Primary School
Not long ago, Kuntai Primary School, situated in the village of Naroosura, was known throughout the Narok District for the poor performance of its students. At that time, more than 90% of girls dropped out before reaching 8th grade, and of those who continued, many were unable to qualify for high school because of their grades. Like so many schools in Kenya, it had reached the point that teachers and parents were tired of working for what seemed to be a lost cause.
In 2007 AfricaHope formed a partnership with Kuntai Primary School which aimed at encouraging and mentoring teachers who had given up hope, helping the school develop strategic plans for their growth and development, and mobilizing parents to support education in the community.
After just two years of partnership with AfricaHope, Kuntai had become one of the best public schools in the Narok District. In fact, Kuntai was the top ranked school in the division in 2009 and 2010! Despite their nearly non-existent budget, the school has been proactive in improving facilities by constructing new classrooms, bathrooms and planting trees throughout the school compound. They are, also, in the planning stages of a small school farm and nearing completion of new dormitories that would allow students from other villages to be educated as well.
In addition to all of this, the teachers have been ministering to the student body in some amazing ways. The students in 8th grade have a worship and fellowship time with teachers on Friday and Saturday nights, and the entire school goes to church to hear the word of God from local pastors each week! The Gospel is having such an impact on these children that even some of the Muslim students are choosing to study Christianity instead of Islam for their required religion classes in high school!
